Ink to Flesh

JD Dance, in association with The Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Distillery Historic District, present Ink to Flesh

Ink to flesh will be an exciting evening of choreography and performance by JD Dance Artistic Directors Jesse Dell and Jordana Deveau, and will feature a new work from guest choreographer Kate Franklin. This production explores our society’s continuously evolving perspectives on physical beauty and the body. Ink, the substance we use to record these changing ideals, to weave tales, produce images and permanently mark the human skin is brought to life, expressed in the flesh.

The program will include two works by Dell and Deveau, Tattwo and Army of Barbie, and a new work by guest choreographer Kate Franklin.

In Tattwo, the audience is transported first into the freakish world of the carnival sideshow and then into the telekinetic minds of two of its characters. The tattooed ladies’ philosophical world view, all encompassing and interconnected as the painted image on their skin, is expressed through the movement of their bodies. As the only anomalous humans in the sideshow by choice, what can these ‘freaks’ tell us about how we view difference?

Both whimsical and dark, Army of Barbie presents a spectrum of perspectives on the ‘perfect’ woman. Bringing social consciousness into their work, Dell and Deveau investigate the effect of enhanced, altered, and plasticized cultural icons on an individuals sense of personal beauty. This piece challenges our seemingly endless pursuit of perfection and questions the extent to which members of our society are willing to go to attain current ideals of physical beauty.

In her new duet A Mark, Kate Franklin uses restless energy and twisted partnering to explore the ways in which those we touch leave their mark on us forever.
